Project Overview
As part of a multi-site retail refresh, Lunds & Byerlys engaged Evergreen Creative to fabricate and install a series of striking canopy structures across multiple store locations in the Twin Cities metro area. These custom overhead features were designed to function as sculptural awnings or “faux steel” canopies—defining space, guiding customer flow, and adding architectural interest to open-ceiling grocery environments.
Design Intent & Fabrication Approach
Though they mimic the look and structural heft of steel I-beams, these suspended canopies are actually lightweight faux-metal builds—engineered for ease of install, cost efficiency, and consistent performance across various ceiling conditions. Each unit was custom-fabricated in Evergreen’s shop to match unique ceiling elevations, HVAC clearances, and lighting layouts at individual store sites.
Several canopy styles were deployed across the project, including:
Open rectangular frames that float above deli and service zones, often used to suspend decorative pendant fixtures or to delineate checkout lanes
Fully enclosed canopies with faux-wood undersides and integrated downlighting, adding a sense of warmth and refinement to prepared food areas
Sloped and angled awning-style forms suspended via cable or rod systems, providing visual rhythm and brand cohesion throughout the store’s perimeter
Each element was designed to align with Lunds & Byerlys’ upscale yet approachable retail aesthetic.
Installation Strategy
Given the complexity of active grocery environments and the range of ceiling types (from drop tile to exposed concrete deck), Evergreen coordinated closely with general contractors and store teams to ensure safe, non-disruptive installation. In many cases, our team installed during off-hours, navigating existing lighting grids, sprinkler systems, and exposed mechanicals to secure each canopy with precision.
Results
The final installations deliver a seamless blend of form and function—anchoring spatial zones within large-format retail layouts while reinforcing the premium atmosphere Lunds & Byerlys is known for. These faux steel canopies now serve as a consistent architectural motif across multiple metro-area locations, helping unify brand experience while offering custom flair at each site.
